Pass Plus is a scheme designed to make newly qualified car drivers become better drivers. The course consists of six specially designed training sessions to follow on from a successful practical driving test. They enable the new driver to gain more experience in driving in town, out of town, in all weathers, at night, on dual carriageways and motorways.
Why have Pass Plus?
Newly qualified drivers are much more vulnerable than they realise. Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident within their first two years of driving than at any other time in their driving career.
It's not just about age - newly qualified drivers are a higher than average risk whatever their age.
Most drivers become safer by driving more miles and by experiencing a wider variety of driving situations. However, it is not enough just to let new drivers learn by experience.
Too often they learn the hard way.
The scheme
The scheme consists of six modules which are ;-
(1) Introduction and Town driving. (2) All-weather driving (some of this may be in theory depending on the conditions at the time). (3) Out of town driving and rural roads. (4) Night driving (Again theory depending on the time of day). (5) Dual carriageways. (6) Motorways.
These modules can be delivered separately or together depending on the individual. From Scarborough I find it better to run the course in one day as we are so far from the motorway.
The scheme is designed by the Driving Standards Agency with input from the driving instruction industry. Only registered driving instructors may conduct the course and when completed the DSA will issue a certificate, free of charge. The pupil may then use this certificate to qualify for a discount on their premium with their insurance company.
